Walking in the Moratalla Mountains, Tuesday 11th to Friday 14th March 2008

A group of 31 Javea U3A members stayed at the Hotel Cenajo for 3 nights, in what must be one of the most beautiful locations in the Region of Murcia. Set by the side of a dam and the river Seguro, the Hotel was the basis for our walking and sightseeing trip to the area, and everyone agreed what a perfect location, with lovely walks along the river, and plenty of interesting sightseeing in the nearby towns.  We had a scenic ride into the mountains, with spectacular views, on our way to the Ermita Casa de Cristo, where we had a guided tour of the Centre for Prehistoric Cave Painting, followed by free time in Moratalla, and then a visit to the Santuario De Nuestra Senora De La Esperanza. The Virgin's Hermitage is situated in a natural cave, which was dug out by the river thousands of years ago. The next day we visited Caravaca de la Cruz, with its very interesting Castle and Sanctuary. Our final day included a rafting trip on the River Seguro in the Canyon of Almadenes, followed by a visit to the Cueva del Puerto.  A great time was had by all, and we had the good fortune of fabulous warm and sunny weather throughout!
