MONDUVER MOUNTAIN 16th-18th October 2007.
Twenty-four seasoned walkers (some donned in black bin liners!) set off from the El Romeral Hotel in La Drova, accompanied by locals Dick and Clodagh Handscombe, for our first walk to Cueva Papallo and Ridge. After a couple of hours the rain came down forcing us to head back, though fortunately clearing enough for us to eat our packed lunches "on the hoof". A very wet and soggy group returned to El Romeral, to be greeted by a blazing log fire. A hearty meal was followed by Angela's quiz! Wednesday dawned bright and sunny, and we had a glorious day, walking the Barren de Manes and Mangles Circuit, from 9.30 am to 5.45 pm (apart from the few who rushed back in time to watch England lose to Russia!). Dick and Clodagh gave us much background historical information, and pointed out the flora and fauna en route. Following another hearty meal, (mine was fish and chips!), some of us played/watched two teams battle it out on the darts board. Sadly, Thursday morning was a complete washout, with torrential rain finding its way into our rooms. I think Lin and I recorded the most, with at least 2" of water flooding our floor as we paddled about trying to get ourselves up and packed! After breakfast, we all departed, abandoning our planned walk to the Simmat Monastery for a guided tour, which was to be followed by our last lunch together, tasting the local speciality of paella. Even so, I think all would agree that we had a smashing group of people and we all had some fun and laughs! My thanks to all participants! Angela.
