Agenda 21

This Group intends to explain to members of the U3A the aims and ideals of the Agenda 21 process and how it is being applied locally, especially in relation to 'Action Plans' and the preparation of a New Town Plan (PGOU) for this municipality. Both processes are being conducted in Castellano/Valenciano under the auspices of the Ayuntamiento, supported by consultants.

Thus this group intends to try to fill the information gap for mainly English speakers and to stimulate discussion and ideas that can be relayed to the Agenda 21 consultants and to the Town Plan Commission team. Initial meetings were in the Javea Players Studio, but the venue has been changed to the Javea Social Centre for future meetings. Contact group leader Tim Ladd or more details and confirmation of meeting dates and venue.

Bird Watching

Anyone interested in joining the birding group should contact the Group Leader, preferably via email. No previous experience is necessary, but a pair of binoculars is essential to take full advantage of this hobby.

Photos from some previous outings can be seen in the Photos section of the Bits & Pieces page. Click here.

Classic Cars

For members who are enthusiastic about Classic Cars and wish to meet other people with a similar interest.

The term “classic” generally means cars of all types of a particular period, broadly the 1940’s to the mid 1980’s, but cars of an earlier period or interesting later vehicles also come within the scope.

At present we do not have enough Members of U3A to justify separate meetings , but the Group Leader and his wife belong to The Marina Alta Classic Car Club which has approximately 100 members with many and varied cars and they enjoy a social/rally event, in our area about once a month.

“Meetings” for U3A members, can however be arranged at a mutually acceptable place and time.

Computer Self Help

There will be an initial get-together to outline aims and see what interest there is. These initial aims would be: to provide a forum where U3A members could discuss their problems with IT and seek help from others in the group from members experience provide a means of identifying "best practice" in software use, e.g. word processing, video editing, computer backups etc. allow informed discussion about the possible approaches to using computers for common tasks, e.g. newsletters, photo archive, web browsing, etc. short talks on topics of interest, e.g. different processor models, storage mediums, anti-virus software, Windows Vista or whatever. None of this will be to an advanced degree! Please contact the group leader, Tom Stevenson, for more information.

Dining Out

The Dining-Out group has been set up for purely social gatherings of friends to have a meal together and to enjoy some good conversation. Our meals are informal and we have no speakers or speeches.  To ensure restaurants can serve food at their highest quality we try and keep the numbers down to around 25 people.  We inform all the members where the next venue is by e-mail during the first week of each month and then booking is accepted on a first come first served basis.

New members are welcome please e-mail us by clicking here with your telephone number and address. Also whether you are single or a couple.

Health Walking

I would like to propose the setting up of a U3A Health Walk starting in September.  This would take the form of meeting once a week for a one hour walk on easy terrain. Footpaths, roads, track etc., no major mountains or unstable terrains in or nearby to Javea.  You choose your own pace by walking at a speed where you “puff a bit” but can still comfortably hold a conversation.  Walkers would need to wear sturdy shoes such as trainers or lace ups, it is not necessary to invest in expensive walking shoes or boots. Sandals are not recommended.

When living in the UK I trained as a health walk leader and will need several volunteers to also train up and assist with the walks. Initially we would need to meet once a week for the next few weeks, once the walks are established we would meet at the walks and, thereafter every 4 to 6 weeks to discuss any issues that might arise.  A minimum of three leaders is necessary to undertake the walks; one at the front, one in the middle and one at the end. Please contact group leader Shirley King if you would be interested in training as a Walk Leader.

History

The history group now has 78 members, many of whom have supported the group for more than 2 years. The group meets monthly and we have presentations from volunteer speakers on a broad base of subjects and eras, which keep the group lively and interesting. We also have a small lending library of history books, magazines and DVDs. Anyone wishing to join the group, give a presentation, donate books, or participate in any other way, will be most welcome. Please contact the group leader by clicking here

IT Partners

Many of our members have skills with computer usage for example word processing, email, web page design, spreadsheets, photo editing. Other members may wish to improve their IT skills e.g. to produce presentations in PowerPoint for a U3A or other group, to research a family tree, to improve word processing techniques, to set up email contacts. This is not a group in the traditional sense, rather a network to match up those with skills, who are prepared to offer some time, with those who want to learn new IT skills in their own homes and on their own equipment. To register the skills you are willing to offer or want to learn click here to download a pro-forma. Return this form to the group leader Dodie Hodgkinson, attached to an email, or just send the equivalent information in an email. NB Computer repairs are not included in this project.

Living Gluten Free

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and oats which provides the stretchy or binding qualities associated with common foods such as bread and pasta. Some individuals are gluten intolerant and therefore need to follow a life-long gluten free diet. This group is designed to assist people coping with such a regimen on a daily basis, locating suitable alternative foods and recipes and how to avoid dietary mistakes when eating outside of the home environment. This information is also relevant to people who avoid wheat or who have family or friends visiting that demand such attention. Some members have already benefited from this group’s kitchen tour, outings to supermarkets and local health food outlets as well as information sheets that are available on request. This group meets as and when required.

Mahjong

                                         MAHJONG

The game of Mahjong (meaning “sparrow” from the twittering sound of the tiles on the board), is also known as the game of Four Winds and is derived from traditional Chinese card games. In 1998 the Chinese government declared mahjong to be an official sport and published a unique set of rules which are now followed internationally. The first World Championship was held in Tokyo in 2002. Now you can play this fascinating and fun game in Jávea. We meet on Tuesday afternoons at 3.00 p.m. at the Grand Café, Toscamar, Jávea. Those who have played before are welcome to join us, or those who haven’t played before but are interested, are welcome to come along and watch the play. For further details please contact the Group Leader by clicking here.

Meditation and Mental Wellbeing

(Guidelines) Our group is not connected, nor inspired by, any religion, sect, philosophy or creed. Our aim is to learn to be more relaxed and focused in everything we do and to learn to cope with stressful situations.

We meet every Friday morning from 10.30 to 11.30 in the Social Centre situated at the back of the Health Centre in  the old town (1st floor, room at the end of the corridor).  Members should feel free to arrive late and leave early.

VERY IMPORTANT – people who would like to join the group should ring the group leader first to learn a few basic rules about the technique.

In between the meditation sessions, people should feel free to talk about anything but it is better to avoid very sad, negative or contentious subjects that could distract other members during the next session.

If one Friday the group leader is not present other members can lead the mediation in turns.

Music 4 U

This is a new group with a monthly group meeting (beginning April 27th, May 25th, & June 22nd), to be held in suitable homes and gardens throughout the season – 10 months excluding July/August and December. It is intended that this be an opportunity for relaxation and refreshment – a contribution will be requested of 2 Euros towards the refreshments of soft drinks and nibbles - members will be welcome to bring a bottle of their own alcoholic tipple – wine or beer or whatever? (glasses supplied). (The €2 contribution to be reviewed in the light of experience).

The music would be ‘popular classics’ although it will be good to learn some new things. The session programme of about 2 hours, will be divided to include something new, a member’s favourite and then a main work to end the evening. To avoid too much talking, the format is likely to be a pre-announced series of programmes and dates and then, on the evening in question, some written information on the programme, pieces/artists/composers etc. This would be aimed at retaining a relaxed atmosphere for listening rather than any lecture style.

At the moment the suggestion is meeting on a Sunday 6-8 pm for the Summer months hopefully in the open air, when it is light for later in the evening and may also be too hot to hold earlier in the day, and from 5 – 7 pm in the winter season when we are more likely to be indoors. These points can be discussed by the group to find the format best suited.

Pat Robinson has a suitable sized home and garden to start us off and the necessary electrical equipment. She is happy to lead the group and Stan Oldfield has offered to assist her. However, Pat and Stan are inexperienced enthusiasts so it would be good to have an experienced third person in support, perhaps someone with some specific music or music history knowledge. Please contact Pat if you are interested in offering this type of support.

If you have not previously expressed interest in joining, please contact group leader Pat Robinson to give her your email address or telephone number (if no email).

We have the use of 2 or 3 tables as numbers dictate. The cost per week is negligible, normally from €6 to €8 per member.

Travellers Tales

The group´s aim is to share experiences of travels, treks, adventures, and, maybe, the occasional mishaps!   They will meet on a monthly basis, with a member of the group giving a presentation, followed by discussion and questions.  Exchanging information – photos – maps – guide books – leaflets  – cost of excursions - etc, will enable us to gain an insight into a country before travelling, and broaden our knowledge of what may be a “must see” or what to avoid!

Walking

First Thursday in the month. Meet 9.30 a.m. Tourist Car Park, Benitachell, opposite Mas y Mas. The walk lasts 3-4 hours with a steady pace to enjoy the scenery and company.  Please make sure you have ample water, refreshments, comfortable walking shoes/boots, and waterproof jacket if the weather looks suspect. Telephone the group leader if you have any queries.

Click here to go the Photos section of the Bits & Pieces page, where there are links to photos taken on several walks by the group.
